Now part of the large GNWR system, the Pittsburgh & Ohio Central
incorporates trackage formerly belonging to the PRR's Chartiers branch,
as well as the Pittsburgh,
Chartiers & Youghiogheny. The Chartiers Branch began operation in
the early 1870s, linking Washington, PA with the PRR line in Carnegie.
Traffic along the line gradually faded as coal mining in the area
ceased and heavy industry died, but the route remaine dopen through the
Penn Central era before finally being sold by Conrail
in 1996. it operated as the Pittsburgh Industrial railroad until
gaining its current name upon acquisition by the Ohio Central. The
railroad is headquartered at McKees Rocks, PA in
the former Pittsburgh, Chartiers & Youghiogheny
facility - trackage rights over CSX permit the
line to reach industrial customers on Neville Island via a bridge over
the back channel of the Ohio River.
