Southern was the only customer for GE's Dash 9-40 line, as it desired a
lower-horsepower Dash-9 to lessen maintenance. After buying 125
standard cab Dash 9-40Cs in 1995, NS then procured just under 1,100
examples of the wide-cab Dash 9-40CW.
