GNWR is the reporting mark for the Genesee & Wyoming, which was abosorbed as a nonoperating subsidiary of the Rochester & Southern. This ancestor of today's Genesee & Wyoming Corporation empire began in the mid 1890s as the Genesee & Wyoming Valley, and began its major expansion in 1982 with the acquisition of former Conrail trackage.
