CSX
SD50 locomotives
In contrast to its highly successful SD40-2
predecessor, EMD's SD50 was
an attempt to produce a 3.500hp locomotive without resorting to a
20-cylinder prime mover as with the SD45. The SD50's 645-F3B proved
capable of reaching this rating, but was far from reliable, and
subsequent SD-series models would be powered by 710 prime movers.
B&O, C&O and Seaboard all rostered SD50s, and CSX also
inherited a portion of Conrail's fleet in 1999, although most of these
latter units were consigned to MoW service. CSX SD50s are being
re-rated to 3,000hp to improve reliability, being redesignated as
SD50-2s.

CSX 8523

CSX 8543 and 8561. 8561 is a former C&O unit, while 8543 started
out as a Seaboard locomotive.
