GEVO Locomotives
The successors to GE's Dash-9 series, the
Evolution Series or "GEVOs" are aimed at giving railroads high
horsepower units that can meet the Tier 2 emission requirements and
burn less fuel. The key to these improvements is the change from the
16-cylinder HDL engine to the 12-cylinder EVO. The cabs and frames
are based on those of the Dash-9s, but as
the EVO engines are shorter,
the hood design is different, and the radiator "wings" are much more
striking in appearance.
ES44DC

CSX is a major user of the ES44DC, which replaced the Dash 9-44CW in
the GE catalog. An initial block of just over 300 locomotives is being
followed up by an order for 100 more. 5461 is shown here westbound out
of Pittsburgh, PA.

CSX 5235 leading a Dash-8,
this time eastbound.

CSX ES44DC 5208 leads a smoking CSX 97 (AC4400CW) and GP38-2 2668
eastbound.

CSX 5372 leading AC4400CW
585 and another unit eastbound. Note the
difference in radiator wing design between the GEVO and the
trailing older
GEs.
